Simon Kohler - Model Britain - Advisory Board

Pioneer of British Models & Hobbies

Simon Kohler is one of the most respected and influential figures in the British models and hobbies industry, with a distinguished career spanning more than four decades. Best known for his long-standing leadership at Hornby Hobbies, Simon played a pivotal role in shaping and reviving some of Britain’s most iconic model brands, including Hornby Railways, Scalextric, and Airfix.

Driving the Hornby Renaissance

As Marketing & Development Director at Hornby, Simon was instrumental in reversing the company’s decline by championing innovative product design and strategic investment. His leadership sparked a new era of creativity and commercial success, highlighted by:

• The relaunch of Hornby Dublo, celebrating one of the brand’s most beloved heritage ranges.

• The creation and introduction of Hornby TT:120, an entirely new scale for the UK that redefined model railway precision.

• The revitalisation of Scalextric, reconnecting the brand with a new generation of enthusiasts.

National Collaborations & Heritage Leadership

Simon has been a driving force behind major national collaborations, reinforcing his expertise in heritage licensing and cultural partnerships. He negotiated Hornby’s lead sponsorship of the Flying Scotsman Centenary celebrations in 2023 and worked closely with the Science Museum and National Railway Museum to develop authentic, licensed collections celebrating Britain’s engineering achievements.

Value to Model Britain

As Managing Consultant at KOHLERcoms, Simon continues to advise leading brands on product development, licensing, and marketing strategy. His work blends commercial acumen with creative storytelling – a hallmark that has made him a cornerstone of Britain’s cultural hobby landscape.

At Model Britain, Simon’s advisory focus includes:

• Ensuring authenticity and realism across miniature exhibits.

• Defining a strategic licensing roadmap and securing heritage partnerships.

• Guiding educational and museum collaborations that enrich the visitor experience.

Simon’s insight ensures that Model Britain captures not just the nation’s landmarks, but also its imagination, craftsmanship, and enduring connection to heritage.
